All of the jewelry featured on the Kumihimo Designs page were created using a Muradai Loom.
The round top surface of the Muradai is known as the "Mirror." Individual weighted bobbins are threaded with silk. A bag containing weights are suspended in the center of the Marudai in order to produce the correct tension.
Bobbins are maneuverd accross the North, South, East and West face of the mirror, sometimes crossing each other, moving clockwise, or counter clockwise, or simply exchanging positions. These threads are the warp. The finished braid length and width is determined by the amount of warp on the bobbins.
